Rebirth Example - Layman Liu is a Worthy Buddhist 劉霜橋老居士 不負學佛

Further, let's look at the next one. This is venerable layman Shuangqiao Liu, who is a good friend of our Teacher Li, also an earliest national conference delegate. Teacher Li invited him to Lotus Society to teach Chinese. The venerable layman Liu was very responsible. It is said that he recorded every lecture. Why did he record for? He would take it back and repeatedly listen to check if there are anything wrong so as to correct it next time. He is really responsible and outstanding. Because he was a national conference delegate, when the official apartment for delegates were built, he moved from Taichung to Taipei.

However, he still dedicated himself to being mindful of the Buddha, also read the magazines and books published by our Lotus Society. He clearly knew how to chant Buddha and to be reborn. As a result, he lived to be over 90 years old. One day, he went to the hospital to check his health. After he came back, he told his old pal, I have lived to be over 90 years old, and I have never felt as comfortable as I do today. Besides, if I'm going to be reborn, you have to do as the dharma and Teacher's words, no cry, no touch, and chant Buddha for me. There were his old pal and a housekeeper at home.

His old pal asked if they should tell the Teacher? It would be fine that you chanted for me. After I am reborn, you can call him to prevent him from rushing from so far away. After saying that, he fell asleep and was reborn. At that time, he was in his 90s. He had never been so comfortable before, and he was reborn on the day he felt most comfy. When the message passed on to Teacher Li the next morning, he immediately wanted to went to help chanting for him. With their deep friendship, on hearing that, the Teacher in his 90s planned to rush to Taipei to chant the Buddha for him. The lotus friends were worried that Teacher was at such an old age so contacted Teacher Liu's home and made sure he had been reborn the previous day.

They had helped chanting and dealt with it. So that Teacher dismissed this idea but asked us students instead, bringing Dharani Quilt and Bright Mantra Sand to have an affinity with Teacher Liu. When we arrived at his home in Taipei, he had been helped with chanting and moved to the funeral home. Then we went there and opened the fridge, I looked at his face, he looked so lively. His complexion was great. He had gone for one day but still looked lively and not like a dead person. A lot of relics appeared after his cremation.

When Teacher Li saw these, he praised: Liu my friend, you are a worthy Buddhist. I'm so proud of you that you've attained such an achievement today. Then some lotus friend asked the Teacher: Was he reborn? Though Teacher wasn't on the scene, based on the relics, he confirmed Liu was reborn. I mentioned this before. Those who practice other dharma and hold precepts, achieve meditation and wisdom could have relics and this is an achievement, but he did not chant Buddha, he may not be reborn.

On the contrary, you see Teacher Liu practicing Pure Land Sect and having so many relics after cremation, this is a proof of rebirth. I think Teacher Liu is like Master Yin Guang who often has this revelation: Be a human gentleman first, and then learn Buddhism. Thus, when he brings up the Buddha's name, which will be pure and righteous with unbounded merit. You see, he knew he would be reborn in advance but was so humble that he asked his family not to distract Teacher Li. We wish Teacher Shuangqiao Liu was reborn peacefully and will come back soon with volition.
