What is Rebirth with Karma 何謂帶業往生?
(English subtitles) Buddhist Master Chin-Kung (淨空法師), 1927-2022, talks dharma.
Subtitles:
May I ask what is being reborn with karma? Karma is all kinds of actions. The Buddha told us: Attachments are karma. Clinging to good is good karma, clinging to evil is bad karma. For good karma, the reward is in the 3 good realms; for bad karma, the reward is in the 3 bad realms, and you cannot get out of the reincarnation.
The so-called rebirth with karma means that you will be reborn in the Sukhavati (the Western Bliss World), but your karma and habit have not been cut off, unlike other dharma sect. For other dharma sect, you must cut them off.
For example, if your vexations of view and thought persist, you will not be able to attain Arhatship. Generally speaking, there are four levels of arhats, which are 1st fruits, 2nd fruits, 3rd fruits, and 4th fruits. The 1st fruition is Sotapanna, that is to let go of the delusion of views, namely, he let go of all the wrong views. In other words, his insight is correct.
It is said in the sutra that he has cut off the 88 kinds of delusion in the 3 realms. He has attained Sotapanna, the 1st fruit of Hinayana, the same as the Bodhisattva at 1st faith level mentioned in the Avatamsaka Sutra. We are talking about the 10 faith levels

The Bodhisattva at 1st Faith Level has cut off the 88 kinds of delusion. These 88 kinds of view delusion, in short, the Buddha summarized them into 5 major categories. The first one is the body view. From this it is clear that the Bodhisattva at 1st faith level or the Arhat at 1st fruit no longer clings to this body as his own. The Vajra Sutra says, "There is no appearance of self, no appearance of human beings, no appearance of sentient beings, no appearance of longevity". He attains the 1st fruit. The 1st fruit achieves a small portion; the 2nd fruit, Sakadagami, achieves a half portion; the 3rd fruit, Anāgāmin, achieves more portions; the 4th fruit achieves full portion, perfect, and that is cutting off the views and thought vexations. Avatamsaka Sutra says, if one doesn't cling to anything, he attains Arhatship, which is equal to the Bodhisattva at 7th faith level.
If one let go of the discrimination further, he is a Bodhisattva.
Those who are reborn in Sukhavati with karma still have attachments. They can be reborn without eliminating the afflictions of view and thought. That is an incomparable excellent dharma. It is not easy to eliminate afflictions. How can one go with vexations? Subdue vexations. He must be able to subdue vexations. So use the method of being mindful of the Buddha. There is only one word in my heart, Amitabha.

You have to truthfully make efforts. However, few people truthfully make efforts to be mindful of Buddha. How to make efforts? When the thought comes up, Namo Amitabha Buddha, kick the thought out, this is called real skill. For example, when our eyes see something that suits our own will, it suits our will, and we like it. Like is vexation. Affections of the entire life are vexation. Subdue it with Namo Amitabha. Let your heart only accommodates Amitabha. Encounter adversity, and it makes you upset, Namo Amitabha.
If you can settle your joy, anger, sadness, and worry with one word, Amitabha, this is a skill. So being mindful of Buddha is not about chanting for one hour in the morning and chanting another hour in the evening. No, that is a practice, so that you should never forget it. What is the real skill? It comes to your heart, thoughts, emotions, and desires. Those are big troubles. When you have a motive, as the ancient said, Don't fear to think, but only fear to awake late. When you have a thought, what is to awake? When you bring up the word of Buddha's name, it is awakening.
I replace all my emotions with Buddha name, only have Amitabha in my mind and nothing else, and that is ability, and this is good at being mindful of Buddha. All day long Amitabha Amitabha, you still like this and dislike that, does it help? It doesn't help, you can't get reborn.

So what he can recite is that he can use this Buddha name to keep his pure heart. This is the sincerity, purity, equality, enlightenment, and compassion we talked about, and he can maintain it at every moment.
Keep your pure mind with this one Buddha's name. Just focus on one in these five. We Pure Land Sect most emphasize purity.
If you have a pure heart, your land will be pure. As long as the heart is pure, of course it will be equal and sincere. If get one, you will get all five. This is why the Avatamsaka says that one is many and many is one. This is called good at being mindful of Buddha.
If you are chanting the Buddha everyday but still grumpy, corrupt, boastful, and obsessed, you are actually not good at chanting. The Buddha chanting is what the ancients said, "When you recite Amitabha, if you are distracted, then no matter how much you shout your throat, it is useless." You cannot go rebirth, you must know this.
