There was once a master in Korea named Yuan Xiao.
He lived during the Tang Dynasty (618 – 906 CE) , not in the present day.
Back then, this country was called Silla. When Master Yuan Xiao was young, he studied under a master, who cultivated very well, and he had compassion. So, Yuan Xiao learned dharma from him.
This master raised a dog in the temple.
He looked after this dog very carefully every day.
Once, this master said he was going afar for some time. So, I will entrust this dog to you,
and you should take good care of it. You can speak dharma to it sometimes.

After the master left, Master Yuan Xiao looked after this dog every day.
Unfortunately, this dog fell ill shortly after he began caring for it.
Not long later, it died. Then he thought: “Master asked me to take good care of it,
but I failed to get this job done.” So he felt guilty. He wanted to speak dharma for it. But how?
He took out the The Text of Dedication Merit for Rebirth and read it for it, wishing it to eliminate karmic hindrance, be reborn in the Pure Land, and attain enlightened - a very professional prayer.

When the master returned, he asked where the dog was,
only to find it has died.
How did you handle it?
I spoke dharma for it according to your words and held a funeral for it.
Where is it?
It's right there, and I haven't buried it yet.
The master said: “Come, I have a few words for it.”
Then the master spoke to the dog's body, calling its name as if it was a child:
“You are so pitiful in this life. You can't get enough food to eat and have to beg. I hope you will be reborn in a place
where food is abundant in the next life. Never get hungry like this life as a piteous dog, and always feel full in the next life. You can go anywhere as long as you're happy. Wish you all the best.”

Master Yuan Xiao was baffled while standing aside.
Can this even count as speaking dharma?
The master turned around and asked: “Otherwise, what is speaking dharma?
You think holding a sutra and reciting it is speaking dharma?
What the sentient beings need is dharma.
Dogs don't need what you are talking about. It only needs its stomach to be full. All it needs is to make it feel delighted. It cannot understand what you are saying for the time being,
nor is it necessary.”
After hearing these words, all of a sudden, Master Yuan Xiao was slightly enlightened. The so-called dharma is in accordance with the needs of the beings.
And that is an expedient guidance.
There are originally no fixed dharma that you can say.
He suddenly comprehended the principle.
4:00
From then on, he talked dharma at ease. No matter whom he encountered,
he spoke as the moment dictated.
Hence, we are inspired more or less from here about talking dharma. What is the dharma exactly? Dharma is an inspiring language. It may be words, gestures, or a smiley face. Dharma needs no fixed form or any requirement to speak out. As long as it can inspire sentient beings, dharma can take various forms.
