Master Ren Shan - Visualizing Buddha can eliminate karmic hindrances 觀佛可以懺除業障

The great and compassionate Amitabha that we recite is a bright star in the entire universe. His popularity is unparalleled. Such a marvelous Buddha. Long time ago, it's too long to count. At that time, there was an Emptiness King Buddha. It was the era of the Empty King Buddha. Back then, Amitabha was also a monk, but just a mortal who was determined to practice. Besides, he had three classmates. Together, there were four monks in total. Though these four monks have left home for practicing, they were not diligent.

Furthermore, hey were depraved, slack, and seriously broke the precepts. Later they realized they had done something wrong and felt ashamed. They might depraved into hell according to causality. These people discussed together. “What can we do? There is no Buddha living in this world.” Buddha has entered nirvana just as the current situation. Monks make mistake in the degenerate dharma era. Sakyamuni Buddha has passed away, what to do? They were vexed very much. If Buddha were in this world, he could salvage us. There is nothing we can do. They couldn't raise faith but were making small talk. Because of their great shame, the Emptiness King Tathagata spoke to them in the void.

“You guys, no need to panic. Although Emptiness King Tathagata has entered Nirvana, the image still exists. You can enter the pagoda to view the picture of Emptiness King Tathagata. Watch the Buddha picture intently all day long. Let your mind be restored to purity, and your sinful karma will be eliminated. The images of Buddha is sufficiently endowed with such a merit.”
After hearing that, these monks were so touched that they entered the pagoda and viewed the Buddha's magnificent appearance.

Due to concentration, their body and mind were purified. Those shadows resulting from sins and wrongdoings had resolved. Their minds had no more those shadows. After their death, they did not fall into evil paths, but ascended to the Buddhist pure land. They continued to practice Buddhism in the long eons that followed.
To this day, these several monks have become renowned Buddhas. They are the Immovable Buddha of the East, that is Akṣobhya; Akṣobhya in the Amitabha Sutra; the Precious Appearance Buddha of the South, that is Ratna-sambhava; Amitabha of the West; the Wondrous Sound Buddha of the North, that is Amogha-siddhi.

Four Buddhas in the four quarters. These four monks cultivated through repentance wholeheartedly and became Buddhas eventually. This example is given in the sutra. What does this mean? It tells us that every Buddha is achieved from mortals. May every mortal practice well. After eons, everyone here will be a Buddha in other worlds. That is encouraging you. So, you don't have to be a saint to learn Buddhism at the beginning. All saints start from a mortal. After realizing this, you don't need to be afraid even if you have faults and karma. But, you shouldn't hear “you don't need to be afraid even if you have faults and karma” and do more misdeeds tomorrow. I can repent anyway. It doesn't matter. Repentance for one sin is the same as repentance for ten sins, just do more.

If you think this way, you are self-degraded. This fact is to encourage you not to deprave anymore but to strive. You should be worthy of your original Buddha nature. Such a confession is positive and active. So, simply being mindful of Buddha can eliminate all karmic hindrances. This is an example of how visualizing the Buddha is a way of being mindful of the Buddha.
