When I just arrived in Taichung (in 1958), I often worshiped Buddha. That is to worship 300 times every day. I followed everyone doing morning and evening courses together. 100 worships in the morning, 100 worships at noon, and worships in the evening. It last a long time. Must practice faithfully. When you just enter the door of Buddhism, asceticism is the most effective practice.
/* Asceticism: severe self-discipline and hard work */
If you are unwilling to endure hardship or work hard. There is nothing you can do.

I often advise and encourage people to worship Buddha. Worshiping Buddha can eradicates karmic hindrances and calm your mind. You need to figure out a way by yourself. Worshiping Buddha is a good way. Sitting still is a good way. Reading sutra and studying teaching are also some other ways. You choose a way which works for you. Everyone is different because everyone has different nature of roots.
For me, I need to concentrate due to many delusions. How to reduce delusions? The most effective ways for me are 1. worshiping Buddha. 2. reading sutra. 3. preaching.
And I don't have delusion at this time.
2:00
So, later I go this way of preaching sutra. Then I have less time for worshiping Buddha. Instead, I extend the time for reading sutra and studying preaching. I need to read every day. When reading, I mark at the end of each phrase, and mark the essential words with color pens. Make simple notes and tips. Thus, I can focus without distracted thoughts. If I had delusion, that would be wrong.
3:00
You shouldn't have delusion when worshiping Buddha. If you have delusion, you will forget counting. So, you can't be distracted at that moment and remember clearly how many times you've worshiped. Worshiping 300 times clearly.
When I have distracted thought, counting will be messed up, and I have to start over. So, you have to pay attention and cope with your vexations and bad habits. Delusion is the most serious vexation. How to cease delusion? It's the best if you understand the reason. Then you have depth. It doesn't matter if you don't understand.
4:00
First, depress delusion. That is crucial for novices. You will be a competent practitioner in the future. No matter reading sutra of listening to sermon, you will be somewhat enlightened. All reply on purity of mind. Without a pure mind, you won't be achieved. To achieve a pure mind, you have to reduce discrimination and attachment. The less the better.
One more thing, all you students have to remember: Never ask anything that doesn't concern you.
I am very good at this in my entire life.
5:00
I absolutely don't gossip this and that. I grew up with this characters since I was a child. I have no this habit. I never ask or talk about others affairs. If others come to me gossiping affairs, I won't pay attention. At most, I muddle through with a few words. I definitely won't put on my mind. Certainly, I won't even pass on those messages. I've developed this habit since my childhood. It's very helpful for me to study Buddhism later. Easy to concentrate my mind. This may be the reason why I have a deeper comprehension.
