However, somebody like to bicker. There are always people who enjoy bickering with you about certain awkward topics. For example, your Buddha sutra says there is a Buddha. You tell me where the Buddha is. If there is one, ask him to come over and show me. See, these are unreasonable requests. Ordinary people like to ask such questions. In fact, he has no intention of learning Buddhism. He attempted to use this awkward question to undermine the Buddhist believers' faith.
There is a case describing such a situation. Once, an intellectual addressed an audience of Buddhists, declaring,
1:00
“The Buddha you believe in is a fake one. Where is the Buddha in this world? If there is one, I scold him right here. If he is terrific, let him kill me. Kill me now. Then I am convinced that he is real and terrific.”
After finishing the words, he paused intentionally and said, “Look, does he come? Um, he didn't come. See, there is simply no Buddha.
Then he made several this kind of examples to prove that he is outstanding. He tried to undermine everyone's faith in this way. After he finished his speech, an old lady in the audience leisurely raised her hand and said, “Sir, may I say something.”
The intellectual was anticipating that after listening to his teachings,
2:00
the elder would get back on the right track and no longer believe in Buddhism. So, he encouraged her to talk to the audience.
The lady stood up and said, “I am not as eloquent as you, nor can I express so many great reasoning. What you just said seems right. But I have a little question for you.
I've been a Buddhist for half my life. Through my belief in Buddhism, worship of the Buddha, and study of Buddhism, I feel I've cut off many afflictions in my life. Especially in my late years, I feel I have found my eternal home in this life. I no longer worry, I feel fulfilled and happy.
Even though as you said, there is nothing after death,
3:00
or I discover I am deceived at the end of life, and it's really empty. May I ask you, What will I lose from this?” You may ponder too, what will you lose from this?
This intellectual was stunned on hearing that. Uh, it seems you have lost nothing. This is an easy question, this is a simple logic. He simply need not answer because you have nothing to lose.
“I have another little question,” she continued, ”If one day your life comes to an end, you suddenly realize that what the Buddhist scriptures say is true.
4:00
You have afflictions, sins, and misery. You will face the unknown world. But you don't believe it in your entire life. Now you have to face it, may I ask, What will you lose?”
On hearing that, the intellectual couldn't utter a word. Everyone, this is a very simple answer. What will he lose? Or, you may ask another question on behalf of the elder, What will you gain (if Buddha's teaching is false)? In other words, will you get a bargain from this? Will your life get better?
5:00
What a strong rebuttal.
From a societal perspective, those who hold faith in Buddhism understand the importance of doing good and strive to minimize wrongdoing. Buddhists possess a peaceful and rational state of mind. Hence, an increasing number of people in society believe in kindness and value virtue. Whether they fear retribution in the afterlife or anticipate blessings in the future, in summary, they all have a motive for virtue. This definitely provides a strong impetus for promoting positive energy in society.
On the contrary, if everyone does not believe that good and evil have their own cause and effect,
6:00
Because people no longer believe that good deeds will be rewarded and bad deeds will be punished. Nobody believe in afterlife, so they desperately commit all kinds of sins to satisfy their desires. Otherwise, you will be a loser. No matter whether you are greedy or not, you're going to die. So why not be greedy? Why?
You intend to create more blessings to accompany you through several lifetimes. Instead, I opt to enjoy everything as much as possible in this lifetime. Only those rare individuals with lofty ideals will serve the public dedicatedly without pursuing his desires.
You may see that clearly by yourself. From a social perspective, Buddhist belief itself has a positive promoting effect.
7:00
From a personal perspective, though I have less secular enjoyment, Buddhism brings me a peaceful and rational state of mind. I have less afflictions, a fulfilling life, and I'm satisfied.
