There was a Chan Master Zhigong, who became a monk at 15, very intelligent, memorized everything he read. After studying Buddhism for 20 years, he could recite all the sutra by heart, outstanding. He came out to preach sutra at the age of 35. He didn't need to look at the book and could lecture Shurangama Sutra.
However, the more he preached, the less the audience. Later, He was disappointed when no one would listen. I've been in seclusion for 20 years. I can recite all the sutras backwards smoothly by heart, but no one listen. Let it be.
Master said: Go visit the master outside. Then he visited the four famous mountains. When he reached the Mount Wutai, after he worshiped Manjusri Bodhisattva, he sat beneath a tree and pondered.
I practice so diligently, recite the sutra by heart, preach the dharma. Why doesn't anyone listen to me? Just as he was wondering, an old monk knocked on the ground with a tin stick: Young master, what are you thinking about?
Master, I ... He sighed and told him his pain. The old monk said: You never have good affinity with sentient beings so that you can not make dharma affinity with people.

Master Zhigong said: Venerable Master, what is your opinion? Do you have money? I've spent all, replied Zhigong. Sell your kasaya. Monks sell to monks. Take some money to buy rice. I teach you how to ferry beings. Then Zhigong bought some rice back.
The old monk said: From now on, you sprinkle the rice every day, and recite the Dharani of Changing Food, to feed birds and hungry ghosts.
After practicing this on the mountains for 20 years, you go to ferry beings because you need to make good affinity with sentient beings.
On hearing this, It makes sense, Zhigong said, I've studied so many books but forgot to make good affinity. Who is that old monk? Manjusri Bodhisattva.
Then Zhigong kept giving food in the mountains. At the age of 55 he came down the mountain and started over to ferry beings. Came a lot of young people. It's all those birds and ghosts that come to reincarnate.
