講義：
地水火風空—身也。釋—心也。各有性分，各有種族，故名之曰界。以無常苦空，細心推之察之。向稱為我，與夫我所者。而今求之，竟同龜毛兔角。究之實際，奚可得哉。
《綱宗科釋》云：分段者，分即分限。段即形段。謂六道眾生，隨其業力，所感果報。身則有長有短。命則有壽有夭也。藏教行人修析空觀，關於地等無我我所。乃能出分段生死，證偏真涅槃。
​分段生死，指迷界凡夫所受的生死。又稱分段死、有為生死。為「變易生死」（指超越輪迴之聖者、菩薩，在未登佛果前，仍有基於果位增上變易而形成的界外生死）的對稱。即三界中六道輪迴的生死，具見惑、思惑之凡夫的生死。輪迴於六道中的凡夫，隨前生所作業之因，其壽命有「分」限，身體形象的存續有一定的時「段」，故稱分段。《勝鬘寶窟》卷中末云：「言分段生死者，謂色形區別、壽期短長也。」
