Some people have misunderstandings when listening to sermons and do not listen to it clearly. They misunderstood. Let me give you an example. In his sermons, Master Chin Kung often said. We must let go of the causal connections, chant the buddha single-mindedly and seek rebirth in the Pure Land. Some laypersons heard these words.
According to the original words. He heard the master say these words, advised us to let go of causal connections, chant the buddha single-mindedly. Based on his understanding, what is to let go of causal connections? He didn't comprehend it in detail, only heard the superficial meaning.
He thought by himself: Since let go of causal connections, then just do nothing. After he went home, he quit the job and donated all his savings. Then chanted buddha for a few days. He neither saw the Buddha nor the Bliss World, nor could he be reborn, but he was faced with a realistic problem. He had no job and no income. He had also donated most of his savings, now was faced with a financial problem.
Later, he went to Hong Kong to seek the help of the Venerable Master. He said, Master, In the sermon, you advised us to let go. I really let go of everything. I quit my job and do nothing now. I sit at home and chant buddha from morning to night. I have given away all my savings.

Now I haven't seen the Buddha after chanting a few days, but I am faced with the problem of living, having no job and no money, and had to borrow money. He went to Hong Kong and issued this question to our venerable master. On hearing his question, Master shook his head. He said: When you listened to the sermon. You neither listened clearly nor understood and misheard, misunderstood the entire meaning.
Letting go doesn't mean you stop doing everything. That's not letting go. Letting go is telling you to let go of worries, anxieties, and delusions in your mind. It is not telling you to quit your jobs. I don't mean that. You neither cook nor do laundry. It's not to let go of jobs but to let go of anxiety and obsession in your mind, let go of vexation and discrimination.
You should let go of these burdens. External things do not obstruct you. These inner vexations hinder us, such as greed, anger, obsession, arrogance, suspicion, and evil views. Those are the things obstructing us. It's not outer jobs obstructing us. No obstacle outside.

It's your inner vexation that is obstructing you. You should let go of vexation and obsession. He misheard and suffered unnecessary losses. Some even went and listened to the sermon themselves. They can twist the meaning like this. No to mention the others. This indicates he didn't listen carefully, probably listens only with ears and misheard the words.
He misinterpreted the sutras and misunderstood the meaning of the phrases. So, listening carefully is very important and is critical. Why did the Buddha, before teaching the dharma at the beginning, told the audience must listen carefully. It's very important.
