Although we have filial children, they hold us up and prevent us from falling. What if we get into a car accident and they can’t protect us? When a drunk driver drives recklessly, it probably will hit us even if we are walking on the roadside. If we are chanting Amitabha Buddha, he will lead us, and we don't need our children to hold us all the time. You try your best to chant Buddha, one step one sound, and Amitabha will lead us closely.
According to The Sutra On Contemplation Of Amitayus, The Buddha Amitayus possesses eighty-four thousand forms, each having eighty-four thousand secondary marks of excellence. Each secondary mark emits eighty-four thousand rays of light; each light shining the entire universe, embracing, and not forsaking, those who are mindful of the Buddha. If you chant Amitabha while walking, the light of Amitabha will embrace you and will not forsake you, it's watching over you.
1:00
If you are watched over by Amitabha, you will be safe, right? It surpasses your children and grandchildren who are holding you. There are Buddhas in the universe. Amitabha will universally enter the hearts of living beings who are mindful of him. Amitabha dwells in our minds. We don't know what disaster will come, but Amitabha knows it. He knows what will happen and when. He will protect them very well. So we shouldn’t be too optimistic. Don't think it's fine that I walk on the roadside. You'd better chant Amitabha. One day, I went to a vegetarian restaurant to preach to them. I go there every other Tuesday. There was a laywoman whose son died very early.
2:00
When I went to the funeral home, I chanted the Buddha's name for him and received induction. She was always close to our Lotus Society. She told me a story, she didn't show up these days. She was hit by a truck while riding a motorcycle. Both she and the motorcycle flew away after being hit by the truck. Bang! All the people in the nearby shops were stunned by the strong collision and ran out to watch. They ran out and saw the motorcycle being bounced that way and the women being bounced this way. The road goes this way and the truck goes this way.
3:00
The motorcycle goes to that side, and the people fly high over this side, across the road. Bystanders saw a woman flying across the road at high speed and sitting on the ground. They told her to stay put because she might be only half alive. You got hit there and flew over the truck and onto here. I think you may have a broken spine. You'd better not move.
She told me, when she was hit by the truck, she shouted two sounds of Amitabha and then fainted, feeling she was floating on the clouds. How is that? Fly slowly to this side and sit on the roadside. Those who running outside saw her flying over there in an instant. But she felt herself falling slowly, slowly, and sat down.
4:00
Those who were surrounding her were scared and advised her not to move, and worried for her. When she woke up, she heard what they said. She opened her eyes and tried to get up. They said, Don't get up. She said, I felt not too bad. They say you were hit there and flew here. But she didn't feel much pain. They took a closer look at her and she was fine, just some bruises on her knees. Look at your motorcycle, it's a mess.
So, it'd be better if you chant the Buddha to the extent that whatever happens suddenly, you are aware to chant the Buddha. She only chanted two sounds, the motorcycle was a mess, and she had only slight bruise. Therefore, It's a great idea for all of you to chant the Buddha while walking. You must chant the Buddha's name when riding a bicycle or driving a car.
5:00
If riding or driving, you may save only yourself. If you are on a bus, train, plane, or ship, and you are able to chant the Buddha, you may save all the passengers on board. That is inconceivable. It's written on the sutra. Guanshiyin Bodhisattva Universal Door Chapter says so, If the boat with many passengers on board was blown by a dark wind to the ghost country of Rākṣasa. As long as one person recited Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, everyone would be delivered. It is the same when we chant the Buddha. So, when you are in the vehicles, chant the Buddha as much as you can. If a disaster occurs, you will not only save yourself, but also free all the passengers.
6:00
You must train yourself from time to time and you will become proficient in it. Without training, you won't know how to chant.
