Do Phật hiệu nên tâm thuỷ ngưng lặng. Bởi thế, kẻ thượng trí chẳng bằng kẻ hạ ngu, biến quá khéo thành vụng về lớn vậy!”

At Zhushan Temple, a real story. One day, the abbot was preaching dharma. He lectured the meritorious benefits of holding the Five Precepts. One will increase his pure wealth; All good vows will be achieved soon; Fame will spread; Increase good fortune; Have good relationship; Ascend to heaven after death. After he said that, many believers asked: May the venerable monk transfer precepts for us? After the sermon, the monk began to transfer precepts formally. At that moment, a thief was sitting at the back. He had nothing to do and was listening too. He heard and said: I cannot hold them all. I kill every day; theft is my occupation; I cannot abstain from sexual misconducts; But I can abstain from lying. I cannot live without alcohol.

So, the monk said: You can just take one precept. Then, he just took one precept. After taking one precept, he went home. Here came his gangster buddies. A general carries lots of gold, and he has only 5 guards. Let's go rob it. After receiving this information, he stood up and cheered: We are gonna do something big today. But when going out, he met his uncle. It's too late to go out, said his uncle. You definitely will do bad thing, tell me where you are going. Because he took a precept of no lie in the afternoon, so he dared not say. Then his uncle twisted his ear: Come back with me. Since you dare not say, you are gonna do misdeeds. So he was seized back. It turned out that he was not involved in the robbery that night. All other gangsters participated in the robbery. Unexpectedly, the general brought 50 guards, not 5. Wrong information. All were arrested and beheaded. He is the only one safe and sound. Keep one precept, let him be free from calamities.

Later after the class, can we transfer precepts? Originally, you are gonna be hit by a car when going back. After your take precepts, nothing happen. But if you were hit by a car when going home, don't blame me. You would have died, but only suffered minor injuries instead. This is dharma. Commit a serious crime and receive a light retribution.
Ok, another story. Once, Sakyamuni Buddha walked around with disciples and saw an old female pig. Buddha smiled. As long as the Buddha smiles at the animals, he will talk the Dharma. You know? Later, if you see old monks smile outside, you can ask: master, what's the matter? Tell me quick. Then Ananada asked: Buddha, why are you smiling?

I tell you that this old female pig was a rooster in a past life. Once, this rooster ran under a tree. A monk happened to recite sutra there. The rooster stayed there, listening to the monk reciting sutra. Because of this merit of listening to sutra, it was free from the retribution of being an animal in the next life. Therefore, when releasing animals, we should recite Heart Sutra, Great Compassion Mantra, or Buddha name to liberate them from 3 evil realms. I also hope you to recite sutra aloud in the future. If you recite louder, the nearby beings at home like mosquitoes, flies can hear it, and they will no longer be mosquitoes or flies. The mosquitoes and flies at your home will dwindle. Sometimes, Chinese people worship the land god and door god on the 2nd and 16th day of the lunar calendar. You don't need to worship them. From now on, you know to recite sutra. You can recite Heart Sutra, Amitabha Sutra on the 1st and 15th of the lunar calendar and transfer the merit. The ghosts in your home will kneel and bow to you. We are almost liberated due to your merit.

Small ghosts become lord of the ghosts. This is the merit of reciting sutra. So after the chicken heard someone reciting sutras, it was freed from its animal retribution and reincarnated as a human, a beautiful princess. One day, when she was pooping, she found that her poop was very dirty, and had a lot of little bugs crawling on it. This princess loved beauty a lot but found what she released stinks. She felt ashamed. I'm so pretty but something actually stinks inside. Then she raised a pure heart. I will never get married in this life and will not go after desires. This is a wisdom. As a result, she died and ascended into heaven, being a celestial god. A pure place without lustful desire. No need to eat. She has enjoyed good fortune for thousands of years. After she has finished her good fortune, now she degenerated as a pig.
5:00
This is the pig, said the Buddha. So, this is the advantage to be with Buddha. To deeply believe in causality without any doubt. But the Buddha told us: Even if you go to heaven, if you don't practice, you will still have to suffer karma after the blessings are over. You cannot be liberated eternally. Then Ananda prayed for liberation for the pig: Buddha, will you help this pig? Help it take refuge and enable it to continue practicing. Then Buddha help it chant Buddha, take refuge, and repent.
