Subtitles:
A question. Some children become arrogant, mocking classmates, taunting teachers after reciting sutra a period of time. Is this a failure of education?
That is definitely a failure. Has this student learned well? No, he hasn't. There is a phrase in the Analects of Confucius. This is worth pondering.
It says, “If someone has the same talent as Duke Zhou,” Duke Zhou is the most admired and honored person by Confucius. “He is as brilliant as Duke Zhou. If he is conceited and stingy, he is not deserved to be admired.” why? Arrogant. Stingy. Then no need to talk about him.
1:00
All admiration are fake, not true. So the teaching by you, leading students to be arrogant, is a complete failure. Why? The teachings by saints: The deeper the competence, the humbler and more respectful the person is.
Let's say all the Buddhas. They pay tribute to all beings, and are not arrogant at all. Why? They know every being has Buddha nature. All beings simply will become Buddhas. How dare they disrespect anyone? So, as long as you are conceived, feeling you are awesome, I am incomparable with others.
Then you didn't learn anything from saint's teachings. There is an old Chinese proverb saying, “When a person is knowledgeable, his mind and temperament is calm.”
2:00
How do you look upon a person? Look upon his temperament – gentle. Confucius's students used five words to praise Confucius' morality: gentleness, benevolence, respect, frugality and concession. With these characters, you really learned. A person learning saint's teachings must be gentle, benevolent, and treat people, things respectfully, and treat people and things with endurance and concession. There are absolutely no rivalry or intentionality.
