From then on, he recommended it for the first time as tiger with horns. This is an expediency that patriarch receive the students of Chan Sect. Must know this. Why did the patriarch say that? It's Master Yongming Yenshou said so. Master Yongming Yenshou was greatly awakened in Chan Sect. He turned around to practice Pure Land and dedicated to chanting Amitabha.
He is the 6th patriarch of the Pure Land Sect. It's said he is the reincarnation of Amitabha Buddha. Chan practicing is very flourishing at that time. People look down on people who practice Pure Land. He set an example. He practiced Chan at first, where he was awakened. Then he practiced Pure Land.

What does it mean by that? Pure Land is no worse than Chan. How can you look down on it? So he recommended those who practiced Chan: Having both Chan and Pure Land is like a tiger with horns.
You practice Chan, plus Pure Land, that is terrific. Originally a tiger, grows a pair of horns. Recommending those who learning Chan knowing they are not good at Chan and struggle in Chan, neither able to attain samadhi nor awakened. He used this method to guide them and receive them.
If you tell them to quit Chan directly to practice Pure Land, they are not resigned to it, and are reluctant to it. They will not accept. With such an expedient method, he suggested to practice this way. Besides, he set an example himself.
