(English subtitles) Master Chin-Kung (淨空法師, 1927 - 2022) talk dharma.
Subtitles:
A student from Hong Kong has a question. My pet is serious sick. If I deal with it by humane elimination(euthanasia), hoping to ease its suffering for a few days before its last breath. Is there any bad cause and effect?
Yes. You have to ask your pet if it is willing to do so? If it doesn't want to, it will have resentment. If it agrees, probably no problem. How do you communicate with it? So it's said,
living beings share the same mind, and people should have empathy. Let's think about it. All living things have thoughts of clinging to life and fearing of death.
When one is seriously ill, he sacrifices his life for fear of suffering or even commits suicide. It is not permitted in Buddhism. Why? That is your karmic retribution, and you have to bear your karma. If you don’t bear it, you'll still suffer the same karmic retribution after you die.
It shows that one cannot create bad karma, and one cannot run away from bad karma. Suicide will not solve the problem, only make the problem more complicated and more troublesome. Not only does Buddhism oppose suicide, but almost all religions reject suicide and do not advocate suicide.

So it is the same with other animals, you should take good care of it. Use drugs to cure its disease, adjust its diet, improve its environment, pay attention to its hygiene. So as to reduce its pain. That's right, you shouldn't kill it. Killing it is inhumane. there's no such thing as humane elimination.
Humane elimination is not said by humans, but the demon say that. The demon drops one atomic bomb to completely wipe out your entire city, which is humane elimination. Do you accept that? He won't say he's inhumane, he says he's humane. Because you humans are so bad that you must suffer humane elimination. You can not have this wrong concept.
