(English subtitles) 紀曉嵐講因果故事 Ji Xiaolan (紀曉嵐1724-1805) was an influential philosopher, politician, and writer in the Qing Dynasty of China.

According to Mr. Ge, the Minister of the Transportation Ministry, in 1748, a man was killed by lightning on the bridge outside the west gate of Hejian County, Hebei Province. His body was still kneeling upright on the bridge, not falling on the ground, with a paper bag in his hand. The lightning did not burn the paper package.

When they opened it, they found it was full of arsenic. No one knew what was going on.
A little while later, his wife came on the news. When she saw him dying in this way, she did not cry, and said. “I knew you would end up like this. I only blame Heaven for your late karma.”
When people asked her why, his wife said: “He often abused his mother. Yesterday, he suddenly came up with an evil idea of buying arsenic to poison her to death. I bitterly advised him through the night with tears in my eyes, but he still refused to listen, so that he was struck by heavenly lightning.”
