[96] The overall direction of our lives is determined by the qualities within our minds.
We previously discussed abiding in peace, now we will talk about taming and guiding. If you truly abide in emptiness, you have found your home. The next step is to begin addressing the peripheral effects of delusion. That is, how do we establish a guiding and subduing force within ourselves to counteract the effects of delusions? The former is fundamentally observing emptiness, the latter is the antidote for the effects.
Let's read this article first, please clasp your hands together:
Becoming a Buddha or a patriarch, or falling into a pit or a ditch, all hinges on a single mind. Hence the Confucianism says:
The human mind is perilous, the cultivating mind is faint.
Even if a saint is blinded by delusions, he may degenerate into a madman, even if a madman restrain his delusions, he can become a saint. The difference between virtue and evil lies solely in the pursuit of profit and goodness.

So, if one receives precepts, studies the rules, listens to sermons, reads scriptures, practices chan, but also harbors desires for profit and fame, then one is sowing the seeds of the three evil paths.
However, clinging to forms of goodness is the seed of human, celestial, demons and heretics; solely seeking liberation from birth and death is the seed of the two vehicles; but possessing a true mind of self-awakening and awakening others is the seed of a Bodhisattva.
But from the self-awareness of the sacred path, the radiance of light shines forth, and we are dedicated to the Pure Land, so that all sentient beings may ascend to the Bliss World together; this is the seed of supreme Bodhi.
Therefore it says: "All dharmas are righteous, all dharmas are evil."

Assume each of us has found our fundamental nature of emptiness, then, from the perspective of emptiness, we begin to deal with the obstacles left over from past lives. At this point, we are qualified to cultivate the force of taming and guiding.
Let's look at the structure of the first paragraph:

Becoming a Buddha or a patriarch, or falling into a pit or a ditch, what you vie for only hinges on a single mind.
Let's digest this text first. Speaking of sentient beings, no matter how long or short your life may be, you will eventually live a lifetime. Whether you live in joy or sorrow, there are two possibilities when you reach the end of your life: The first, one achieves enlightenment or become a patriarch; the second, one falls into a pit or ditch.
When we reach the end of life, it's possible that our life is on an upward trajectory, a process called "enhancement," your next life will be better than this one. This is one possibility. The second possibility is that you will be degenerated in the afterlife. So our lives have two possibilities: the first is upward, the second is downward.
So where does the key lie? It lies in your minds at the moment of your death.
3:00
The entire Surangama Sutra speaks of this concept: life is created by our minds. The Surangama Sutra divides our mind at the time of death into two parts: one is emotion, and the other is thought. What is emotion? It is attachment to emotion.
In our daily lives, we come into contact with many people and encounter many stimuli, which generate a certain reception. This reception gives rise to a delusion, which definitely have a form. Then your mind dwells on this delusion, which becomes an emotional attachment, namely, a kind of emotional feeling. This is the first one.
The second one is the wisdom you gain through studying the teachings of sages and observing those rationales; this is called thought.
4:00
You should know that emotions are stimulated by external circumstance, they are emotional effects generated through the stimulation of the six senses.
So thought means that you generate your own rational thinking from within yourself through the principles in your mind. The Surangama Sutra says that if you are highly emotionally attached at the time of death, you are falling down. Because "emotion" is like water, and "thought" is like air, a kind of righteous and vital energy.
If you want to be a human being in your next life, the Surangama Sutra says that you should have at least six parts thought and four parts emotion. That is to say, your rational observation should transcend your emotional attachments. So, the six thoughts and four emotions are the standard for human.
If you are purely emotional, and you have never cultivated yourself, never read the teachings of sages, and indulge your desires all day long. When you die, you are prone to fall directly into Avici Hell. This is what it means for the pure emotional to enter Avici Hell.
