Do Phật hiệu nên tâm thuỷ ngưng lặng. Bởi thế, kẻ thượng trí chẳng bằng kẻ hạ ngu, biến quá khéo thành vụng về lớn vậy!”

【81】 What is the main content of the main text?
Now, through the preface, we know what Buddha is and what Dharma is. We are now qualified to talk about the force of taming and guiding.
There are four sections in the main text: the first section is about developing an intention; the second section is about right view; the third section is about practice; and the fourth section is about attainment of the fruit. The former three, developing an intention, right view, and practice, are the cultivation and study in the causal state, and the fourth is the merit in the fruit state.
【82】 What are the four themes of the section on developing intentions?
Let’s first look at the first one - the Developing intentions Section. There are four themes in Developing an Intention Section: First, revealing one's intention is the first step in spiritual practice. Why should one develop an intention? Let's first explain the rationale behind it.
Second, discerning one's intentions serves as the standard for establishing action. How to develop intentions? There are various standards for developing intentions.
1:00
Third, we need to understand the different causes and conditions for developing intentions. How can we develop intentions correctly.
Fourth, we conclude and point out the merits of developing intentions to encourage people to practice. What benefits will we get if we develop intentions truthfully?
【83】 Practice must first set goals
Let's see the first one. Developing intentions is the foremost task in spiritual practice. Read the scriptures:
“I heard that the key to entering the path of Buddhism is to develop an intention, and making a vow first is the most urgent task in spiritual practice.
If you make a vow, you can save living beings; if you develop an intention, you can achieve Buddhahood.
If one does not develop a broad intention nor establish a firm vow, even after countless eons, one will still be in reincarnation; though one practices, it will be of no avail.
Therefore, the Avatamsaka Sutra states: To practice all virtuous deeds while forgetting the Bodhicitta is called the demonic karma. Those who have forgot are like this, let alone those who have not yet developed.
So, if one wishes to learn the Tathagata Vehicle, one must first make the bodhisattva vow. This cannot be delayed.”
Good, I will explain. We mentioned dwelling the mind in peace, and here we talk about the issue of developing the intention.
Developing an intention to enter the path is critical; making a vow first is urgent in practice. Developing an intention and making a vow are similar, very close, that is, you must have a goal first.
2:00
After dwelling in peace, the next step is guidance. Why do we need a goal to guide us first? Because there are so many dharma in Buddhism, and life is too short, you can't try everything. So once you have a home in your heart, you should start paying attention.
That is to say, during a short period of time, you have to think about what kind of result you hope to become in your next life, so that you can focus on doing what you should do. When we practice the Dharma, we must be selective. This is related to your goal. You must use your goal to examine your process to see if there are any deviations.
3:00
Only with a clear goal can we know why we should develop an intention. In Tiantai Sect, this is called "knowing well the way to unclog and clog". That is to say, some people tell me this dharma, and some people tell me that dharma, so how should I choose?
In other words, this dharma will help you achieve your goal, it will have a bonus effect and make your practice more unimpeded. If you practice this dharma and it let you move more smoothly toward your goal, then this dharma is worth practicing. If practicing this dharma becomes an obstacle to your goal, you should refrain from doing it. So your life choices are determined entirely by your goals. Without a goal, there is no way to judge your process, what to take and what to give up.
4:00
So, If you make a vow, you can save living beings; if you develop an intention, you can achieve Buddhahood. Whether it is seeking Buddhahood upward, or ferrying beings downward, there must be a goal to guide you. Therefore, when we are practicing, we should first abide in the nature of emptiness and face our life from the perspective that there is nothing inherently.
After dwelling in peace, the next step is guidance. Set a goal, see what result you hope to achieve in your next life, and then realize it within your short life, so the second thing is to make a vow.
【84】What are the faults of not setting goals?
Here's the downside: What's the faults of not setting goals. If a person does not develop a broad mind or make firm vows, he will join others in group practice and also participate in the Buddha Seven.
