Do Phật hiệu nên tâm thuỷ ngưng lặng. Bởi thế, kẻ thượng trí chẳng bằng kẻ hạ ngu, biến quá khéo thành vụng về lớn vậy!”

This morning, came an elder layman from Shanghai. He is 81 years old this year. He performs a good example for us. According to what he told me, he spent a year memorizing this sutra from beginning to end. He sets an example for everyone, he said. Why can he recite it at such an old age? It's all about sincerity and purity, he said. We cannot memorize it, because our hearts are not sincere or pure.

With sincerity and purity, everyone can do it. Generally speaking, young people have good memories, but elders cannot remember. 81 years old. As the old saying goes, There is nothing difficult in the world as long as they have will and really have sincerity and purity. I believe that he was able to memorize this sutra only through ascetic practice and diligence.

If you are afraid of hardship and slack off, it will not work. He really set a good example for us.
Back then, Teacher Li (Bingnan) advised me to preach sutra, but I dared not to accept because it was very difficult to preach sutra. Why did I promise the teacher that I could learn from him later? It was Kanzhi Lin, a laywoman, set an example for me.
3:00
She was my classmate in the Sutra Learning Class, the oldest one, 60 years old. At that time, I was 31, and she was 60. Her granddaughter was already a primary school teacher. What's her level? She was graduated from primary school, she had brought forth the resolve for learning sutra preaching. She didn’t know many words in the sutra, so she asked people everywhere. She had a notebook and asked: How to read this word? What's the meaning of this phrase? She didn't learned from a fixed teacher, everyone was her teacher.
4:00
She respected everybody. She practiced asceticism and studied diligently, day and night. She has succeeded in learning it. She spoke very well on stage. She had a great affinity with the Dharma. When preaching, she attracted a large audience. I saw this phenomenon and was encouraged by her. I was 31, and she was 60. I graduated from junior high school and she graduated from elementary school. If she can, why can’t I? Because of seeing this situation, I told the teacher: OK, I will do it.
5:00
I learned from Kanzhi Lin, an elder classmate. When studying the sutra, she often came ask me how to pronounce the words and what they meant. I would tell her. This effect has a great impact on me. If it hadn't been for Laywoman Lin's example, I wouldn't have dared to make up my mind. So the elder from Shanghai has set a good example. What does that mean?
6:00
Learning Buddhism is not difficult and brings us great encouragement. The most important thing in practicing asceticism is to let go of your afflictions and bad habits.
