Do Phật hiệu nên tâm thuỷ ngưng lặng. Bởi thế, kẻ thượng trí chẳng bằng kẻ hạ ngu, biến quá khéo thành vụng về lớn vậy!”

[42] What was the purpose of the Buddha’s preaching?
We are talking about the sixth phase, achieving enlightenment. This section talks about the brief history of the founder of the religion, which is a brief history of the life of Sakyamuni Buddha.
1:00
In Buddhism, our life is divided into two parts: one is form, and the other is rationale, also the way. Therefore, the ancients called the Buddha's life "Eight Phases of Enlightenment". When we study the history of Buddha's life, we must grasp two key points: One is the form; the other is the way behind it. Forms are born and deceased, and changeable; but this rationale, which is eternal and unchanging, is a true merit. However, we must realize the way through the form.
2:00
For example, you can make a cup out of gold, and it will have the form and function of a cup; you can also make a Buddha statue out of gold, and it will have the form and function of a Buddha statue. Although the form changes, the essence is still gold, which is unchangeable. So from the perspective of Buddhism, the Dharma taught by the Buddha has only one purpose, which is to guide us to realize the principle of non-birth and non-destruction from the phenomena of life. Then you will succeed.
[43] What is the way behind the appearance of happiness?
If we look at the history of the Buddha, since he manifested in the human world, he must have been spreading his dharma and his way. There are eight phases among them, and there are three kinds of paths in the eight phases:
3:00
The first is the path to peace and happiness; the second is the path to liberation; the third is the path to Bodhi. Throughout his life, the Buddha used eight phases to inspire us to the path to happiness, liberation, and Bodhi. First, let’s look at the Buddha’s path to peace and happiness. In the first four phases of the Buddha's life: Enter the fetus, the birth, the child phase, the marriage and the birth of a child, we see that the Buddha manifested great happiness. Buddha was born into a royal family. His father, a king, built four palaces for him to live in alternately during the spring, summer, fall, and winter seasons. He also married Yasodhara, the most beautiful woman in India. Therefore, whether he was enjoying material enjoyment or emotional enjoyment,
4:00
he manifested a form of peace and happiness. There must be a path behind this form. What is this path? The path to peace and happiness is the principle of cause and effect. Everything happens for a reason. This rewards appearing in the Buddha's life reveals that it is due to the good karma that Buddha has accumulated through giving, keeping precepts, and forbearance over many lifetimes and eons. When we see a person’s appearance, we start to differentiate and have delusions: “Oh, this person is so dignified!” We become envious and jealous. In fact, you see this person is dignified, and dignified appearance comes from forbearance. If seeing this kind of person, he will be more tolerant and does not easily argue with others when things go wrong.
5:00
If seeing a person is very wealthy, we are sure in his past life he liked to share his possessions with others. So, when a Buddhist disciple sees a certain form, he will immediately realize that there is a rationale behind it and that everything happens for a reason. We see that the first four phases of the Buddha are very happy. We assure that the Buddha has accumulated good karma for a long time in his past lives. When he came to this world, he was not born in an ordinary family, but grew up in a wealthy and prosperous circumstance. This is the first path - the path of peace and happiness. We judge the period from the Buddha's birth to his marriage and having a child as the path of peace and happiness. I believe that it is very easy for ordinary people to enter the path of peace and happiness by studying Buddhism.
6:00
Good deeds are rewarded with good, evil deeds are rewarded with evil, it's not that there is no reward, it's just that the time has not come yet. We believe that there is truth in life and life has rules. This is the first path, and it is not difficult for ordinary people like us.
[44] The path from peace and happiness to liberation is a key
The most serious thing is that the second step we are gonna take is to upgrade from the path to peace and happiness to the path to liberation. Many people cannot cross this threshold.
If you can't cross this threshold, it will be difficult for you to be reborn. You can only be a good person in this world, you cannot become a practitioner who has transcended this world. Therefore, transcending from the path to peace and happiness to the path to liberation is a key, a very key! Let’s see how the Buddha did it.
