Gyelse Tokme Zangpo (author) was born in 1295 in Sakya. In 1308, at the age of fourteen, he was granted primary and novice vows by Lama Pelbar, Khenpo Rinchen Pelzang and Lobpon Rinchen Dorje. At the age of 23, he participated in public debates in numerous monasteries in Tsang, earning a reputation for his scholarship in Pramāṇa and related topics. He was an extremely learned scholar, one who studied an infinite number of teachings from all traditions. In 1324, he received full ordination at the age of thirty. He passed into nirvana at the age of 74 in 1369. It is said that Gyelse Tokme Zangpo was able to take upon himself the suffering of others and to give them his wellbeing, and without any expectation as to the result, he was extremely generous to all, particularly the poor, the destitute and the suffering.
