The venerable Layman Zhong, Junliang. Some might think that those who chant Amitabha all day long and seek rebirth in the West would have a short lifespan. Quite the contrary. According to what I saw and heard. Those who are dedicated to chanting the Buddha and cultivating are mostly healthy and long-lived. Why? Because they are focus on this pure and majestic Buddha's name, as the Prajna Heart Sutra said, His heart has no anxiety and no terror, and is away from averted delusion. Such a pure heart wouldn't easily induct other karmic hindrance.

He ever approached the Venerable Monk Xuyun in his young age, and converted to him as his disciple. As a result, Monk Xuyun advised him to chant the Buddha. He was confused why a prominent monk of Chan Sect would advise him to chant the Buddha. Later, he came to Taiwan and met Teacher Li. After hearing the Dharma, he realized that the master was compassionate and advised him to chant the Buddha and seek rebirth. He was wholeheartedly practicing.
Half a year before his rebirth, I and several Lotus friends visited his home, asking for his revelation. At that time, he modestly said: "Teacher Li is an expert in this field, I dare not say it.

How about I say something about the way of health and longevity." We all rejoiced and praised and said, Teacher Li has been reborn at 97. You are 98 now, so you are the most eligible to say the way of health and longevity. Layman Zhong said, To achieve health and longevity, first, you must abstain from killing and release lives.
Master Yinguang said, Buddhism has been passed down for a few thousand years. Abstaining from killing and releasing lives are the primary practice. Don't talk about what great principles you have learned, you haven't even mastered the basics. You only learn the knowledge but didn't benefit from it. Only by following the teachings can you benefit from them. How much you benefit from it depends on how much you've done. There are boundless benefit.

So, Layman Zhong emphasized we must first abstain from killing and release animals. The second is to be vegetarian and chant the Buddha.
The day before we helped him with chanting, he, as a 98-year-old elder, could take the bus alone and go to the lotus society to listen to the sermon and chant the Buddha. I even walked him to the bus stop afterwards. As a result, after a few hours sleep, his family called and said he was gonna be reborn and asked us to help chanting for him. That's excellent. He was healthy and deceased without illness. Right at his home, we took turns chanting Buddha for him for a week.

The day before he was reborn, I said, "Can a person as virtuous and renowned as you be able to give us some inspiration? Leave us a golden word so that we can follow it as a practical indicator."
He replied seriously and distinctly, Chant the Buddha to cease birth and death ( or Bear the Buddha in mind to cease birth and death). That is so great. The next day, amid the pure and solemn sound of chanting Buddha, he saw that Amitabha and Avalokitesvara received him with his own eyes, and was reborn in peace. The room was filled with an exotic aroma, and many relics appeared during his cremation.
