At the end of life, your life may go upward, that is called increase. You lead a better life in the afterlife, that is one possibility. The 2nd possibility is you will degenerate in the afterlife. So, our life has two possibilities, one is upward, the other is downward. What's the key? The key is your mindset when dying.
The entire Shurangama Sutra talks about this concept. Your life is created by your mindset. Shurangama Sutra separates our minds into two parts. One part is affection. The other part is thought. What is affection? Simply put, it's emotional attachment.

In daily life, we perceive many stimulation from people and things. Hence, this perception generates a delusion, also produces a form. Then your mind dwells on that delusion, and it becomes an emotional attachment. That's a feeling, this is the first.
The 2nd, through learning reasoning from sages and saints, you generate wisdom via rational view, which is called thinking.
So, you have to know affections are stimulation from external circumstances. They are emotional effects stimulated through six roots and sensors. Thinking is based on reasoning and occurs through inner contemplation.
2:00
When life ends, Shurangama Sutra says, if the proportion of your emotional attachment is higher, you will be depraved lower. Because affection is water, thinking is qi, which is a kind of righteous qi. The criterion of being a human in the afterlife, you need 60% thinking at least, and 40% affection. That is, your rational view must outweigh your affections. So, six thinking and four affections, this is the criterion for human.
If you are fully affectionate, never practice or study the way of saint and sage, and indulge desires all day long, you will directly fall into Avīci Hell. Then, with nine affections and one thinking, you will fall into Intermittent Hell. Thus, it arises gradually.

Therefore, if you want to be reborn at the end of your life, you need to turn your emotional attachments into rational thoughts, and turn into wisdom. This is important. It's not practicing karma, it's thoughts reform. You must guide your emotional attachment to diminish gradually, and increase your view of wisdom gradually. This is the right thought at the end of life. So mindset reform is crucial in the Pure Land Sect. So, Master Oyee especially stated that the last thought at the end of life affects where we are going.
We have been enjoyed five desires in many lives. After enjoyment, it leaves a lot of after-effects, generating many affections and delusions.
4:00
What's wrong with these joyful fruits of the world? After it lets you enjoy, you raise a lot of delusions that you cannot get rid of. In other words, for an ordinary person, the potency of his desires exceeds the potency of his wisdom.
In fact, when it comes to our past, we are not that different. As the Taiwanese proverb goes, the seventh should not laugh at the eighth. You've many wrongdoings, and I have many wrongdoings too. We have shared karma so that we are born in the same world. Speaking of the past, we do not have many differences, that's why we are born at the same time, same spot, and same space because we have shared karma.

We come from the same past, but we don’t necessarily have the same future. According to Confucius's views, what is a good person? A person who can restrain his desires and inspire himself on the right way. He has made efforts to learn and reform in this life. What is a bad person? He indulges in sins and pleasures, never learns, and becomes a bad person. Everybody, we have the same past but won't have the same future. The key is how you will do from now. You have two choices. First, you spend all the good fortune amassed in the past lives,
6:00
enjoy them to your heart's content. Then you have only one way in the afterlife, that is to the three evil paths. Because if you luxuriate in desires, you definitely will be upside down at the end of life. Because you give way to the potency of vexation. Therefore, you have to be devoted to practicing in this life. The difference between a good person and bad person is that a good person can restrain his vexation while a bad person succumbs to his vexation. This is important.
Many people think, I will be better in the afterlife if I do good. It's not necessary. It's said in the sutra, if you indulge your desires and vexations, even though you do many good deeds,
7:00
because you have depraved mindsets, you will get rewards in the evil paths. Good karma will bring you a happy life, but your mind determines whether you rise or fall in the six paths. Now you see that many dogs are are happily raised, right? But, they are in the animal path, which is a lowly reward.
