I used to read an article: Debate in the British PhD community. This book is also circulating within our Lotus Society. Who wrote this book- Debate in the British PhD community? It was written by a PhD, who was a British, I remember he is named Berkeley.
Before studying Buddhism, he studied philosophy. The theory he proposed at that time was materialism. He was very young at the time, having earned his doctorate in his twenties.
1:00
He has been renowned as a PhD in Britain at a young age. He studies philosophy and pursues philosophy all day long.
There is a good tradition in Britain where the PhD community gets together to debate every year. All types of doctoral intellectual are welcome to join, including physics, chemical, medical, philosophy, and so on. All get together to debate, that is why it's called the debate of PhD community. So, they hold the debate in the PhD community once a year.
In order to pursue the truth of philosophy,
2:00
this doctor sneaked to India one day. He believes that India is a country with an ancient culture and developed philosophy. So, he went to India one day. India has many religions with profound doctrines, such as Brahmanism. Among them, he was especially interested in Buddhism, and he kept pursuing. Some enthusiasts pointed to the mountains, so he continued his search following their directions.
Finally, he found a man who led him to a place with a cave, which was blocked by a rock.
3:00
Then this man demonstrated his extraordinary ability to turn the rock, and the door opened. After he was brought in, the rock blocked the door again.
Strangely, it was very dark at first because they were in a cavern with the entrance tightly closed. But, the further they went, the brighter the cave became, and he had no idea where the light was from.
Later, he was told that he was Venerable Kasyapa. The Venerable Kasyapa has not yet attained nirvana, holding the Buddha's robe and alms bowl, and will hand them over to Maitreya Bodhisattva in millions of years. Because this man has causal conditions, the Venerable Kasyapa led him into the cavern by means of extraordinary ability.
Afterward, Kasyapa told him to leave home. Where to leave home? You have to go to the Golden Pagoda (Shwedagon Pagoda) in Myanmar to become a monk.
4:00
Later, he went to the Golden Pagoda and became a monk. After several years of practice, the doctor achieved his first fruition of Arahant. After attaining enlightenment, he left India and returned to Britain. When he reached Britain, nobody had ever seen this kind of monastic clothing.
Just like when we went to Australia this time, the locals thought we came from the world-famous Shaolin Temple. Some people have filmed martial arts moves in movies. They mistakenly thought we were very good at kung fu fighting, and have shown us respect very much, said: Are you from the Shaolin Temple? We had to explain to them via the local interpreters.
There is no monks in Britain. Seeing him wearing weird monk robe,
many children followed him behind.
5:00
A group of children followed a man dressed in strange clothes down the street. However, on that day, they held the annual debate among British doctoral community. Back then, there were no cars, and people traveled by horse-drawn carriages.
When those doctors rode in the carriages and passed by him, they were wondering why these children followed behind this man. They looked at the man carefully and said: Are you Dr. Berkeley?
Yes, he said.
Why do you wear like this and walk on the street? Today, it's holding the debate of doctoral community. Everybody is looking for you.
6:00
You've got lost for many years, where have you been? Get up my carriage and sit with me. The two chatted all the way until they reached their destination. Once they arrived at the venue, he became the main character. Since they hadn't seen him for many years, everyone asked about his recent situation.
I went to India to study philosophy. He then mentioned Buddhism, which is thriving in India, and so on. They did not believe his description, so they asked him many questions. He answered each question one by one. That's why it's called the debate of the doctoral community.
One of them said: I'm not convinced by your words.
He replied: You are not convinced? You had a dream last night that You went out and walked to a certain street, then turned into another street.
7:00
You kept wandering around till returned home at dawn. Your wife had got up but ignored your greeting. Then, you were angry and went back to your room and woke up. Is that so? On hearing that, that man was astonished.
I never told others about this dream. How do you know?
He said: Yes, this is telepathy. I know what you are doing.
No, it's not. Then, how do I know? Have you told me? Yea, looks like real.
