Ji Xiaolan ???? Stories of Cause and Effect #22 - Bodhisattva's Compassion 大士慈悲

(English subtitles) Ji Xiaolan (紀曉嵐1724-1805) was an influential philosopher, politician, and writer in the Qing Dynasty of China.

There is a temple in Cangzhou. There lived a Buddhist nun named Dong. When it was the birthday of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, she prepared offerings and presented them to the Buddha.
After she placed the offerings, she suddenly felt a little tired and leaned against the Buddhist table to rest for a while.

In a trance, she dreamed that Guanshiyin Bodhisattva said to her: "If you don't offer me food, I won't be hungry. If you offer me food, I won't get any fuller.
Now, there are five refugees outside the temple. They couldn't beg for any food and are almost starving to death. I hope you can give them these offerings to save their lives, which will be ten times more meritorious than offering them to me."
The nun suddenly woke up, opened the temple door and saw that there were indeed five hungry people. She then gave offerings to these refugees to satisfy their hunger.
From then on, after she made offerings every year, she gave the offerings to beggars. She said, "This is the Bodhisattva's wish!"
滄州有一間插花廟，有一位比丘尼法師俗性董，正好遇到觀世音菩薩的聖誕，她便準備供品，敬獻佛前。當她擺設完供品之後，忽然感到有些疲倦，便靠著佛桌暫歇片刻。 恍惚之間，夢見觀音菩薩對她說 :「你不給我上供，我也餓不著，你給我上供，我也不會因此而更加吃飽。現在寺門外有四五個難民，他們乞不到食物，已經快要餓死了，希望你把這些供品拿去給他們吃，能救活他們的命，比給我上供的功德要大上十倍呀。」 這位尼師忽然驚醒，她打開寺門一看，果然有四五個飢餓的人，遂將供品布施給這些難民以充飢。從此她每年上供之後，都把這些供品施捨給乞丐們吃，她說 :「這是菩薩的意思啊 ! 」
