Do Phật hiệu nên tâm thuỷ ngưng lặng. Bởi thế, kẻ thượng trí chẳng bằng kẻ hạ ngu, biến quá khéo thành vụng về lớn vậy!”

(English subtitles) Buddhist Master Chin-Kung (淨空法師), 1927-2022, talks dharma.
subtitles: If you cook meals with meat for your family, as long as you don't kill living beings, you haven't broken precepts. In the case of cooking meat for the family, one can open the precept. There are rules to open, shade, hold, and violate precepts. But you definitely should avoid killing. The Buddha said that the meat you bought is called Three Pure Meats. You didn't see the killing, you didn't hear the sound of killing, and nobody kill it for me.

It is clearly stated in the Precepts Sutra. You can buy this kind of meat to support your family. Let your family gradually know the benefits of a vegetarian diet. Once, we went to Kuching, Malaysia, and stayed at the villa of layman Jinyou Li. The villa is set in a very large area of 5,000 acres (20 km²). This is a huge villa with roads totaling 16 kilometers in length. There are more than 300 employees in the villa who are completely vegetarian.

The 300-odd employees were recruited from more than a dozen villages in the vicinity. The mountains around that time were virgin forest. As the Chinese say: Live near the mountain, eat the mountain; live near the water, eat the water. So they were all hunters originally. Now, Li buys up their hunting gear, lets them work in the villa, and pays them descent wages so they can support their families. So, people in that place don't kill animals now. It was difficult for them to accept being vegetarian at first. After eating it for half a year, they became accustomed to it and now they like it very much. Why? They look younger and have less wrinkles on their faces, and they realize that there are so many benefits to be a vegetarian.

That's how you ferry your family at home. You mustn't persuade him not to eat meat. After you've been a vegetarian for 1 - 2 years, he sees that your health is better than his, sees that your complexion is better than his, and that your wrinkles are gone, he will try to be a vegetarian. Thus, you can ferry your family. So I think layman Li is outstanding. He has ferried people of a dozen villages, leading them not to kill living beings. This is a great example.
