Therefore, if the hearts of people in the world do not correspond to the Buddha, even reciting the Buddha's name will be in vain. There is still some time, I will tell you a story. But some of you may have heard it many times. Because I have talked about this at every temple. But you may still be confused after listening to it many times. The more times you listen, the more impressions you will get.
Once upon a time, there was a widow whose husband died. Her husband left her lots of money, so she was rich. She established a Buddha hall at home. She chanted Buddha and recited sutra in the morning course and in the evening course. However, what was the woman doing?

She was engaged in unethical business, even a loan shark. If she was doing this to make a living and make it easy for people, that is fine. She made huge profits from that. If you owe her money and don't pay it back when it's due, she will seize you, tear down your house, and take away all the chickens and ducks without one left. She had no blood or tears. When it comes to benevolence, she was reluctant to spend a dime.
The daughter felt very sad when she saw her mother in such a condition. Her mom's style is wrong. She was her mother's only child. An only child.

On seeing her mother's wrongdoings, she wanted to ferry her. So, one day she told her mother. “Mom, what is the purpose you chant Buddha?”
Chanting Buddha is to pursue going to the West.
“Mom, you chant Buddha like this, will you go to the West?”
Silly child, if we recite the Buddha's name wholeheartedly, before we die, Amitabha will send someone to pick us up to the West.
“Mom, If you want to go to the West, you should do some good deeds. You're a loan shark. You lend money at high interest rates. Many of the people who borrow money are poor. If they can't repay their debts, you press them, and some are driven to lose their families.”

Silly girl, since your father died, we had a little money remained. If I hadn't lent money at the high interest rate, how would we make a living?
She said, “Well, I won't argue about how you strive for living. But we better do some good deeds. I heard there was a flood somewhere and a lot of people died, and houses were washed away. Some people are doing charity and saving lives. Why don't you give them alms?”
What crazy words are you talking about? I myself need a handout. How can I give to others?
“If you can't do something beyond our capabilities, you can do something easier. Just like the old man who died recently behind our village. He was lonely and poor.
4:00
Some kind-hearted people launched a fundraiser to buy a coffin to bury him. They came to you for donations, why didn't you give them money?”
I owe him no debt. Just because he died, should I pay for his coffin?
“It doesn't matter if you don't do charity. Are you behaving politely to your neighbors? You often quarrel with them. Is that good?” If they don't bother me, why would I bother them?
As a result, the daughter’s persuasion was of no avail. The daughter was very filial and would not disobey her mother. No matter what, she would find a way to ferry her mother. One day, her mother was chanting Buddha with a rosary on her hand,

chanting a phrase of Amitabha and turning a bead, chanting two phrases and turning two beads. Námó Āmítuófó...
Then her daughter came from behind and said, “Mom.”
She turned around and asked: “What's up,” but her daughter ran away.
She thought: “I answered immediately when you called me, but why did you ran away? I ignore you.”
Her daughter came again, “Mom.” What do you want?
If she was chanting Buddha, she would call her Mom. If she answer what for? She ran away. One phrase came, and one phrase went. Namo Amitabha. “Mom.” What? She was irritated for being called constantly.
When her daughter came to her again, Namo Amitabha. Mom.
“Drop dead! Short-lived child,

I am chanting Buddha, what are you kept calling mom for?”
“Mom, it's useless that you are chanting Buddha.”
“Why am I chanting Buddha useless? I'm chanting Buddha sincerely. Why is it in vain?”
She said, “Do you know how many times I call you?”
“I just care about chanting Buddha. How do I know how many times you have called?”
She said, “When you just chanted the Buddha, you were counting one by one with rosary, right? I didn't take rosary, but when calling you mom, I just counted with my fingers. Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, I called exactly nine times. Before I called for the tenth time, you scolded me. I only called you nine times, and you were unhappy. You chant the Buddha like this from morning to evening. I reckon Amitabha will be so angry that his intestines will be broken.”
“You, short-lived child, I chant the Buddha sincerely, why is Amitabha angry?”
