China Pilgrimage ???????? Oct' 2024 - Stop 6: Longmen Grottoes 龙门石窟
After touring the ancient Buddhist sites of Shanxi, we took a high-speed train to Luoyang, Henan province — one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. Luoyang had been the capital for more than 1,500 years across 13 dynasties.
Here we arrive at the magnificent Longmen Grottoes (Dragon's Gate Grottoes 龙门石窟), a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned as one of the three great Buddhist cave complexes in China (alongside Dunhuang and Yungang). Carved into the limestone cliffs of the Fragrant Mountain along the Yi River, the grottoes contain over 100,000 Buddhist statues, 2,800 inscriptions, and 2,300 caves and niches.
Construction began in the Northern Wei dynasty (5th century) and flourished through the Tang dynasty, spanning several centuries of devotion, artistry, and imperial patronage. The colossal Luchana Buddha (Sambhogakaya/Reward body of Vairocana/Shakyamuni Budddha), 17m tall statue, commissioned by Empress Wu Zetian, is one of the most iconic masterpieces, embodying both the grandeur of Buddhist art and the spiritual aspirations of the time.
Today, the Longmen Grottoes stand as a breathtaking testimony to the depth of Buddhist faith, Chinese culture, and world heritage.
