講義：
〔修四梵住的目的〕　
獲得毗缽舍那（慧觀，「奢摩他」，此云止的對稱）之樂及有的成就（善趣）為此等四梵住的共同目的；破除瞋恚等為（四梵住的）不共（各別）的目的。2020/12/22即破除瞋恚為慈的目的，其餘的（悲喜捨）以破除害、不樂及貪為目的。亦即所謂︰「朋友，瞋恚的出離，即慈心解脫……。朋友，害的出離，即悲心解脫……。朋友，不樂的出離，即喜心解脫……。朋友，貪的出離，即捨心解脫。」
〔四梵住之敵〕　
於此（四梵住）中各各有近與遠二種敵。即︰「慈梵住」，(1)以貪為近敵，因其性質（與慈）同類故，好像行近其人的仇敵相似。那（貪）是很容易得有機會侵襲的，所以應該好生保護於慈。(2)瞋恚是遠敵，（與慈的）性質不同故，好像一人之敵藏於深山裡面相似。是故當以無恐怖（於瞋恚）而行慈。若人行慈而同時起瞋怒是不可能的。
　　「悲梵住」，(1)「未得願望的、好樂的、愛的、悅意的、適意的與世間品質相應的眼所識之色，而憶念其未得（而起憂），或者憶念過去已得的而今已成過去消滅及變易的而起憂，此等憂名為世俗的憂。」像此等所說的世俗的憂為（悲梵住的）近敵，因見失敗（與悲）同類故。(2)害是遠敵，（與悲的）性質不同故。是故當以無恐怖而行悲憫。若行悲憫而同時以手等去加害是不可能的。
