???? China Pilgrimage ???????? Oct 2024 – Stop 4: Datong, Shanxi

On the fourth stop of our sacred journey last year (after visiting Mt Wutai and Yungang Grottoes, the videos of which were uploaded in November, 2024), we explored the historical and spiritual wonders of Datong — a city rich in Buddhist heritage and architectural marvels.

Highlights of our visit:

✨ Hanging Temple (悬空寺) - Suspended dramatically on a cliffside since the Northern Wei dynasty (built around 491 AD), this awe-inspiring temple harmoniously integrates Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism.

???? Shakya Pagoda (释迦塔)
Yingxian Wooden Pagoda - Dating back to 1056 AD, this is the tallest and oldest wooden pagoda in China. We paid homage to the sacred relics of Shakyamuni Buddha enshrined within and contemplated the centuries of devotion preserved in its wooden beams.

???? Pure Land Temple (净土寺) - A peaceful site dedicated to Amitabha Buddha and the Pure Land teachings. We chanted together in front of Amitabha’s statue, reflecting on His compassionate vows for delivering sentient beings in the Western Pure Land — a moment of deep connection and stillness.

???? Huayan Temple (华严寺) - This grand Liao dynasty temple immersed us in the profound teachings of the Avatamsaka (Huayan) Sutra. Its majestic halls and intricate murals offered a glimpse into the magnificence of Mahayana Buddhism’s vision of interdependent awakening.
