???????? China Pilgrimage – Oct 2024 Stop 1: Mengshan Giant Buddha, Taiyuan, Shanxi
On the first day of our journey, we visited the awe-inspiring Mengshan Giant Buddha (蒙山大佛), located in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. Carved in 551 AD during the Northern Qi dynasty, this remarkable statue stands at 63 metres, making it the second tallest stone-carved Buddha in the world—but historically, it is the oldest of its kind.
For comparison, the more widely known Leshan Giant Buddha in Sichuan (which we’ll visit in December 2025) was built 162 years later and is slightly taller at 71 metres, making it the tallest.
We also visited the renowned Shanxi museum and celebrated Jiawen’s birthday on the first day with lotus family members from Australia, Canada, France, Russia, Malaysia and China ????????
