Rebirth example - Filial and Virtuous Children 詹進發老居士 孝慧兒女

Let's see this Venerable Layman Zhān, Jing Fa.
This is a special case. The Zhan's wife was the earliest lotus friend in our Lotus Society. In the early years, there were very few people in the Lotus Society. His wife is very devout in chanting Buddha's name, but she has been in poor health for a long time. She felt the suffering of this human world and practiced very hard. One day, she told her daughter, See, the circumstances of the Bliss World has appeared. She pointed out the window to her daughter, who was little back then and had an impression, saying, my destined conditions for the Bliss World has been ripe, and I am going to be reborn. You have to be filial to your dad.

After saying this word, she got reborn immediately. At that time, she was too young to understand, and thought, Why did the Buddha took my mom away so early? In fact, if her mom didn't chant Buddha and her life was end, she had to go, and it's hard to tell where she would reincarnate. In fact, if her mom hadn't chanted Buddha, at the end of life, she would have had to leave and reincarnate somewhere. At the early stage of lotus society, there were not many lotus friends yet. After mom's rebirth, her bond to the Lotus Society became distant. Later, her father remarried and she had a stepmother. The stepmother is also a Buddhist, taking care the children very well. So, when I just met their family, I wasn't aware that she was a stepmother. The children were so filial. Only biological children could be so filial.

It's obvious that their family education is very successful. When this daughter grew up, married and had children, she met me and renewed her Buddhist connection.
One day, her father was walking on the road and was accidentally hit by a car. When he was admitted to the hospital, doctors said there was nothing he could do and that they needed to prepare for his funeral. At that moment, the bond of the 4 kids to the Buddha would have faded, and they all knelt before the Buddha and prayed for his blessing, and vowed to do merits for their father. At this point, the doctor told them to prepare for the aftermath, was surprised to find that the man had survived.

Although he's alive, he's unconscious, lying there like a vegetable. He tried to speak but could not utter a word, he could move his limbs but could not stand up. Their financial status is fine, so they hire a nurse looking after him 24 hours a day. They had good financial conditions, so they hired nurses to take care of him by turns 24 hours a day. Then they children also took turns to accompany him. In addition, he has a young son who was studying in the United States. He took a year off from school and came back to stay with him. Then you know the children in this family are very filial. Thus, they have been taking care of him for 1, 2, and 3 years, he still lay there the same. During the 3 years, the children has done a lot of merits for the elder.

The oldest child didn't know much about Pure Land. Since his father was sick, he thought to eliminate misfortune and extend life for him. So he was dedicated to chanting the Medicine Buddha and reciting Medicine Master Sutra. Since I knew his daughter well, I advised her to concentrate on chanting Amitabha Buddha, which is the most convenient and stable method. Another son said that his father must have had heavy karma after being ill for so long and was dedicated to reciting the Ksitigarbha Sutra. Another child is enthusiastic about doing good deeds, especially releasing animals, giving alms, and printing good books. They have been doing these things for three whole years, but his father is still lying there. Their filial piety never waned, and the less their father got improved, the more they feel they're not trying hard enough.

Then they became more devout and filial. As the saying goes, Filial piety is the first of all virtues. Look for loyal ministers out of the door of filial sons. So be careful when making friends. If your friend is not filial to his parents, you need to be careful. Confucius said, one should be affectionate to his family before affectionate to others. If a person treats his parents badly, who have grace to him, but he treats you well, he may have other intentions.
The eldest brother further thought that the reason why my father did not recover was because of my lack of sincerity. So he vowed according to the Repentance of Medicine Master to do a dharma assembly of igniting light of Medicine Master for 49 days, worshiping the Repentance and reciting the Sutra of Medicine Master. But there is one point, it is to release 49 lives of various creatures.
